Understanding Domain Privacy (ID Protection)
When you register a domain name, international regulations set by ICANN require your contact details to be published in a public database called WHOIS. Without ID Protection, anyone in the world can look up who owns your domain.
What Is the WHOIS Database?
Think of the WHOIS database as a public phone book for the internet. By default, it can display:
- Your full name
- Your home or business address
- Your personal phone number
- Your private email address
Important
WHOIS data is publicly accessible and searchable by anyone, anywhere.

The Risks of Public WHOIS Data
If your personal information is public, you may become a target for:
- Spam & Telemarketing: Bots scrape WHOIS data to send junk emails, SMS messages, and sales calls.
- Identity Theft: Exposed addresses and phone numbers increase your personal security risk.
- Domain Hijacking: Attackers can use your public details to impersonate you and attempt to gain control of your domain.

Important Note About Regional Domains
Regional Registry Rules
Some domain extensions (such as .co.ke, .ug, or .tz) have privacy rules defined by local registries. If ID Protection is not available during checkout, that extension may not support it.
