How to Use the cPanel File Manager

The cPanel File Manager is a powerful tool that allows you to manage all your website files directly from your browser, without needing an FTP client. You can create, edit, upload, download, compress, and extract files, as well as manage permissions.

Accessing File Manager

  1. Log in to cPanel: Use the credentials provided in your Welcome Email.
  2. Open File Manager: Navigate to the Files section and click File Manager.
  3. Select Directory: Choose the folder you want to work in (by default, public_html contains your website files).

Navigating the Interface

  • Left Panel (Folders): Shows all directories in your account.
  • Right Panel (Files): Displays files in the selected directory.
  • Toolbar: Contains actions like Upload, Download, Move, Copy, Delete, Compress, Extract, Rename, and Change Permissions.
  • Breadcrumb Navigation: Lets you quickly jump between directories.

Common File Manager Tasks

  1. Uploading Files: Click Upload, select files from your computer, and wait for the progress bar to finish.
  2. Downloading Files: Right-click the file and select Download.
  3. Creating Files/Folders: Use the + File or + Folder buttons, then name your new item.
  4. Editing Files: Right-click and select Edit or Code Edit for HTML, PHP, or CSS files.
  5. Compressing/Extracting: Use the Compress or Extract icons to create or unpack archives.
  6. Renaming/Moving: Right-click and choose Rename or Move to adjust file locations.
  7. Setting Permissions: Right-click > Change Permissions to set CHMOD values (e.g., 644 for files, 755 for folders).
